According to a study conducted by two Italian researchers and published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, there are 7 categories of food that your pets should not eat.
Watch out for chocolate and toothpaste
In order to establish the exhaustive list of the most toxic foods for pets, two Italian researchers reviewed all the scientific studies that had been launched on this subject. Results : 7 categories of food must be kept out of reach of your dog or cat.
First of all, avoid foods that contain theobromine. Present in chocolate, cocoa, coffee and tea, this molecule can be very toxic especially for dogs. It can lead to heart problems, high blood pressure and even kill it.
Also be careful to keep all products containing xylitol away from your pets. Present in toothpaste or chewing gum, this substance can cause hypoglycaemia, which is potentially fatal. Here again, dogs are more concerned than cats.
Also avoid garlic, alcohol and grapes
But that’s not all. Garlic, onion or even chives can be dangerous, because they contain organosulfoxides. These molecules can damage their cells and cause vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain. Alcohol, paint, varnish, perfume, bath and shower, all products that contain ethanol should also be kept away from your pet, as it can lead to hypothermia or make it difficult to breathe.
Finally, avoid the grape, which causes kidney problems in dogs, hops, which triggers a fever, but also Macadamia nuts, which can cause weakness, vomiting, fever or abdominal pain in dogs.
