Because displaying the Nutri-Score encourages manufacturers to improve their recipes, UFC-Que Choisir asks the government to fight to impose this logo at European level.
- UFC-Que Choisir emphasizes the beneficial effect of Nutri-Score on industrial recipes.
- A very significant improvement in the nutritional quality of foods was observed for three families of foods where the Nutri-Score is most often displayed: cereal bars (43% display), special breads and rusks (61%) and cereals of breakfast (97%).
- The association therefore requests that it be displayed on all products in the European Union.
“It’s a public health issue.” : it is in these terms that Alain Bazot, the president of UFC-Que Choisir addressed the government, on France News, when asking them to make the Nutri-Score mandatory in France and Europe.
The Nutri-Score has a beneficial effect on industrial recipes
Indeed, according to a study by the consumer association, this nutritional labelling, presented in the form ofa small logo affixed to the packaging which rates the products from A, dark green, for the most favorable on the nutritional level, to E, dark orange, for the least favourable, encourages manufacturers to optimize the composition of their products.
“Noting that nutritional quality has improved considerably on the only shelves where it is widely displayed, the Association urges France to mobilize to defend the Nutri-Score with the European authorities, and the European Commission to make it compulsory in the Union.”, can we read in the press release.
The Nutri-Score A have jumped in the last 8 years
Indeed, who says display says improved revenue: there have been up to 5 times more “good“Nutri-Score since 2015, indicates the association, in particular with regard to special breads, cereal bars and breakfast cereals.
For UFC-Que Choisir, this study proves that this Nutri-Score must be made compulsory on all food products, in France and in Europe. “Insofar as this Nutri-Score induces a change in consumer behavior, it will encourage manufacturers to improve their recipes to get closer to A“, the best note, explains Alain Bazot, president of UFC-Que Choisir.
Until all products display the Nutri-Score, the association advises consumers to “circumvent the lack of information” thanks to a “free mobile app Which productbased on Nutri-Score rules“.
