The couple from Boulogne-sur-mer (Pas-de-Calais) now parents of a baby born alive despite a medical termination of pregnancy (IMG) feels helpless since the birth of her child. The medical examinations carried out at the CHRU (regional university hospital) in Lille are not good: they confirm that the newborn is suffering from a cerebral malformation. Unfortunately, the Delages expected this information from the doctors. It was because of this brain abnormality, spotted during prenatal exams, that the parents made the tough decision to terminate the pregnancy late. The baby was born alive despite theabortiontherapeutic, to the surprise of parents and the medical team. An exceptional case for which the health authorities were contacted to determine if there was a possible medical error.
Deprived of oxygen after cardiac arrest
For now, parents are worried about the impact of the IMG (a prick injected into the umbilical cord) on the health of the baby. The day of this termination of pregnancy, the cardiac arrest had been noted by the doctors before the infant uttered its first cries.
Examinations carried out last Thursday revealed the presence of spots on the part of the brain that was not affected. “According to the doctors, the cardiac arrest deprived the baby of oxygen and this makes our child inoperable whereas before, we could have tried something”, explain the parents to the Picard Courier. If the baby’s vital prognosis is not on, the couple say they are preparing for the worst.
