Researchers from the University of Otago (New Zealand) and those from Dundee (Scotland) say in a study that you should consume at least 25g of fiber per day to be in better health. Not only to avoid the constipationbut also to reduce the Type 2 diabetes as well as the risk of stroke and heart attack. “The evidence of the various health benefits is now overwhelming and it is high time to act and add maximum fiber to your diet”said Professor John Cummings, one of the authors of this study carried out at the request of the World Health Organization (WHO).
WHO to issue new guidelines
This same team of researchers had already led work on the sugar level of our diet, which had led to the rWHO recommendations. In the same way, they will plead for the WHO to recommend a minimum daily consumption of 25 to 29 g of fibre. “Our study found a 15-30% reduction in deaths from all causes, including those related to cardiovascular disease, in people who consumed this volume of fiber compared to those who consumed the least fiber”.
coronary heart disease, stroketype 2 diabetes and colorectal cancerwere reduced by 16 to 24%. This means 13 times fewer deaths and six times fewer cardiovascular diseases per 1000 people.
This study was published in The Lancet.
