Public Health France published the first estimates fractions of deaths currently attributable to regional smoking. If, on a national scale, the share attributable to tobacco of deaths is 13%, it varies from 3.7% in Guadeloupe to 15.5% in Corsica, followed by the Grand Est (14.7%) and Hauts from France (14.5%).
Cancers and cardiovascular diseases
Among women, the fraction of deaths attributable to smoking represents 6.9% at the national level (i.e. 19,800 attributable deaths), and varies from 1.3% of deaths for Guadeloupe to 8.7% in Ile-de-France . Among men, the fraction of these deaths represents 19.3% for the whole territory (i.e. 57,300 attributable deaths), and varies from 5.9% for Guadeloupe to 23.2% for Hauts-de-France .
The most frequent causes of death attributable to smoking are cancers (with more than 45,000 deaths), followed by cardiovascular diseases (more than 17,000 deaths). At the national level, cancers represent 61.7% of deaths. This rate varies between different regions.
“While we are going through an unprecedented health crisis with Covid-19, smoking remains a major public health problem. This is why Public Health France is maintaining its actions to combat smoking. After Month Without Tobacco, the Agency is launching a new campaign to motivate smokers and help them successfully quit smoking in the time of Covid-19”, informs Viêt Nguyen-Thanh, head of the Addictions Unit at Public Health France.
What helps to quit smoking?
In 2020, nearly 340,000 visits per month on average were recorded on the website tobacco-info-service.fr, and there have been more than 331,000 downloads of the tobacco info service application. This same year 2020, 39 89 received 39,742 calls and provided more than 70,000 telephone consultations for smoking cessation support.
“The current health context leads to being more attentive to one’s health and to taking care of it. It is also a period that makes people aware that many daily actions help to stay healthy. During the first confinement, 20% of smokers have reduced their consumption. Reducing or even quitting smoking in the current context is possible!”, continues Viêt Nguyen-Thanh, head of the Addictions Unit at Public Health France.
