“Smoking among young people, although declining, remains a concern,” recalls the League against cancer.
- A survey carried out for the League by IPSOS in January 2020 shows that the general public is largely in favor of the establishment of tobacco-free spaces.
- Respondents support the smoking ban at 89% in public parks and gardens, 86% around schools and 81% on beaches.
“It is urgent to generalize the ban on smoking around schools to protect children”. In a press release, the league against cancer campaigns for the ban on smoking near French schools to be put in place by the start of the 2022 school year.
200,000 young people start smoking every year
On the occasion of the month without tobacco which begins tomorrow, the League against cancer challenges the government: “to protect the youngest, it is urgent to generalize by decree the ban on smoking near the 61,510 French schools”, activists say. “A tobacco-free generation from 2030 is possible, provided we act now!”, they add.
Smoking among young people, although declining, remains a concern: approximately 200,000 of them start to smoke in France every year. “Preventing the entry of children and adolescents into smoking involves denormalizing it, especially in the places of education they frequent daily”, underlines the League against cancer.
One in three cancers due to smoking
“The #MoisSansTabac operation is also an opportunity to continue to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking: a month without tobacco is 5 times more likely to quit smoking for good!”, explains Professor Daniel Nizri, volunteer president of the League Against Cancer.
Tobacco kills 75,000 people in France each year, including 45,000 from cancer: one in three is due to smoking. The best known is lung cancer, of which 90% of cases are linked to active smoking and 5% to passive smoking. Other cancers are also caused by tobacco: throat, mouth, lips, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, uterus, etc. Many other pathologies can be caused or aggravated by tobacco, in addition to the undesirable side effects linked to the consumption of this toxic substance (decreased fertility, alteration of the oral and nasal mucosa or of the cerebral arteries, etc.) .
