Although presented as safe, it would seem that electronic cigarettes also present some risks for their users.
While the harmful effects of cigarettes are now well recognized, this is not yet the case with electronic cigarettes, presented as a safe alternative. The principle of the electronic cigarette is simple. A tank is filled with an “e-liquid” which is heated. This produces a vaporizing solution in the form of smoke, which is then inhaled into the upper respiratory tract. It is possible to choose whether or not to put nicotine in the loading liquid.
The presence of Candida albicans
A research group in Oral Ecology, from the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the University of Laval, in Quebec, studied the effects of cigarettes on Candida albicans, organisms present in our microbiota. The results of their study were published in review Environment Research and Public Health.
The researchers replicated the vaping effects of a daily e-cigarette user by exposing candida albicans to e-cigarette vapor for about half an hour a day for multiple sessions. According to the results, it would seem that in contact with the vapor of electronic cigarette, the bacterium proliferates in an excessive way and becomes virulent. The researchers were able to observe that with or without nicotine, the bacteria grew abnormally quickly, unlike those kept away from the vapor of the e-liquid. Thus, it would seem that the e-cigarette, particularly fashionable, is not so harmless.
