Japanese researchers bring promising first data on vitamin B6 intakes. According to researchers, this vitamin could help prevent severe forms of SARS-COV-2.
Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin called “essential” because the body does not know how to manufacture it and does not store it. The body is therefore obliged to draw every day from the foods in which it is present. Since the start of the pandemic, many researchers have been studying food, but also the role of vitamins in combating the harmful effects of covid-19. According to a study published in the journal Frontiers In Nutrition, vitamin B6 could play a role against severe forms.
Vitamin B6, a major ally for the immune system
“Vitamin B6 has a close relationship with the immune system. Its levels always drop in people with chronic inflammation such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.” says the researcher at the head of this study, Thanutchaporn Kumrungsee, associate professor at the Graduate School of Integrated Life Sciences at Hiroshima University. In a press release relayed by EurekAlert, the Japanese at the University of Hiroshima pointed to growing evidence showing that vitamin B6 plays a protective role against cardiovascular disease or diabetes and that a vitamin B6 deficiency weakens our immune system.
A natural alternative against Covid-19?
Vitamin B6 plays a crucial role in the synthesis of certain antibodies, hemoglobin and certain neurotransmitters such as serotonin, melatonin or even dopamine. The study also suggests that vitamin B6 is a known anti-thrombosis and anti-inflammation nutrient. Dr Kumrungsee clarifies that “Thrombosis (blood clotting) and cytokine storm (hyper inflammation) could be closely related to the severity of COVID-19. Cytokine storms occur when the immune system goes dangerously overdrive and begins to attack even healthy cells. Meanwhile, blood clots linked to COVID-19 can damage vital organs like the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys.
