All die-hard revelers have dreamed of it the day after the party! Science seems to have found the solution to eliminating hangovers with a common, easy-to-find food. It would be enough to drink 220 ml of Asian pear juice before you start partying.
The sure-fire ways to get around the dreaded headaches, nausea, and digestive problems that can follow heavy drinking are rarely scientifically studied.
Australian researchers from the Commowealth Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIRO) analyzed two studies carried out on animals and one on humans.
The study findings reveal that consuming 220ml of Asian pear juice achieves the desired hangover reduction effects. The absorption of pears would also be effective. This is because Asian pears act on key enzymes involved in the metabolism of alcohol, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) to speed up alcohol metabolism and elimination or l ‘inhibition of alcohol absorption.
But for the effects to be real, the fruits must be absorbed before drinking alcohol. “The effect was shown if the pears were eaten before drinking alcohol. There is no evidence that you can consume pears after drinking and avoid hangovers. And remember, the best way not to have a hangover is to not drink too much, ”recalls Manny Noakes, one of the study’s authors.
This study remains a preliminary study and further experiments must be carried out to validate these conclusions.
Alcohol, a real public health problem
More than 200 diseases are linked to alcohol consumption: infectious diseases, traffic accidents, injuries, homicides, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes … Pathologies or accidents which total 5.9% of annual deaths. 1 in five deaths in the world results from the ravages of alcohol, informs the World Health Organization (WHO) on its site. 3.3 million people died in 2012, against 2.5 million in 2005. And 320,000 young people aged 15 to 29 die each year from alcohol-related causes, recalls the WHO.
