Driving a car is a necessity for many, but also a pleasure for others. Whether by the landscapes, the route or the points of interest to visit, some routes are sufficient in themselves to travel. The argus has therefore selected 10 of the most exceptional routes in the world.
Go alone or accompanied, in 4 x 4 or by bike: this top 10 is intended to be as eclectic as possible. One route per country, crossing the five major continents at least once, this is the program to concoct for you the best possible tour of the world by asphalt (and sometimes by land). However, this classification is not exhaustive. The extent of the United States, Morocco or Scotland among a thousand other destinations would still have had something to talk about for a few hours. But it all depends above all on your tastes, whether you are more of a playful nature, with the right vehicle, or ready for a road trip aboard your motorhome.

France is not left out
Renowned for its beautiful stretches of road and the diversity of its panoramas, France could very well place several pawns in the ranking. We think of the famous cornices of the Riviera winding through the Mediterranean Sea passing through the village of La Turbie. The Gorges du Verdon, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, are not to be outdone with creeks and superb lakes like that of Sainte-Croix. Some circuits in Finistère or in the passes of the Pyrenees also deserve your attention.

Other sections of asphalt are to be traversed urgently if you do not know them yet. The Millau viaduct, for example, is a major architectural piece. Perched 270 m high, it connects the cities of Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers over a length of 2.4 km. The road to Calvi, in Corsica, will also give you satisfaction. Let’s finish these honorable mentions with the national road 5 of Reunion Island. The latter overlooks the Cirque de Cilaos and offers breathtaking panoramas… as well as more than 400 bends. We finally chose the Napoleon route in this classification for the diversity of the landscapes offered and the history that results from it. To be discovered by any means of transport, even if motorhomes regularly invade nearby hotels, summer and winter alike.
Let’s go around the world

The photo slideshow (and our trip) begins in the United States with the Overseas Highway, a real highway above the waves. This gray ribbon crossing an expanse of turquoise water is intriguing. Then comes Route 40, based in Argentina, which crosses the country from one end to the other without interruption. The rest of the journey is on the other side of the Atlantic, in Europe, with French, Italian, Norwegian and Romanian routes. A nice mix of places “that roll the best” not far from home.

The Sani pass, in South Africa, is one of the most original places in this top 10. Here, no tarred road but a path that climbs until you reach Lesotho, and only in 4 x 4 ! We continue this overview to find ourselves in Asia with two exceptional routes, in China and Japan. Both serve as many audiovisual clips as the tortuous layout invites sporty driving. Imagine the drifting competitions with one or more cars launched at full speed in the hairpins… The Great Ocean Road, in Australia, completes this classification with its disproportionate cliffs and its paradisiacal waters. Finally, it was unthinkable to publish this panorama of the roads of the world without addressing Route 66 which symbolizes the bonus of this ranking. But enough talk, The argus invites you to travel together, starting from the west until reaching the east of the globe.
