August 11, 2003 – Cancer patients have been introduced to Tai Ji Quan, and many claim significant benefits from it.
The project was implemented in four hospitals in the Chicago area by Dr. Patrick Massey, a physician who also holds a sixth dan black belt in Tai Ji Quan. He explains that he has set up this introductory Tai Ji Quan program, the only one of its kind in the United States, in order to offer patients an accessible form of physical exercise that can markedly improve their quality of life. .
Even though the project is not the subject of a formal scientific study, Dr. Massey reports that several participants report increased energy levels, better sleep, reduced pain, reduced pain, improved digestion, a reduction in their stress, a reduced need for medication to control their blood pressure, and an increased ability to deal with the side effects of their chemotherapy or radiation treatments.
Dr. Massey says the concept of “getting in shape” too often involves vigorous exercise and heavy sweating while it is possible, he says, to derive health benefits from moderate exercise, such as Tai Ji. Quan.
Tai Ji Quan classes are offered free of charge to patients who wish to participate.
