Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), breast cancer, heart failure. As many chronic diseases as tai chi could relieve in the elderly, according to Canadian researchers.
Tai chi, an ancient Chinese discipline, is a gentle physical activity that does not put too much strain on the muscles and joints. It is a sport suitable for the elderly. Moreover, it reduces the stressand anxiety. Used as a complementary therapy, tai chi is already incorporated into some western health care approaches, often to aid in the treatment of cancer, arthritis and heart disease.
This new study, carried out by a team of researchers from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada) investigated the link between tai chi and symptoms of cancer, heart disease and COPD.
To reach their conclusions, the researchers analyzed 34 studies already carried out on the subject and observed 1600 participants. The individuals followed in these studies practiced tai chi, on average two or three times a week, for 12 weeks. They were on average 50 to 70 years old. Researchers found that practicing tai chi was associated with improved physical capacity and muscle strength in patients.
Participants who suffered from osteoarthritis experienced improvements, and in particular relief of pain and muscle stiffness.
“In summary, tai chi would provide enough stimulus to exercise and may be a suitable sport for patients with multiple comorbidities, such as COPD, heart failure, and osteoarthritis,” the researchers write. in their study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
