The new donor law is currently being debated in the Senate. According to that law, everyone is a donor, unless he or she indicates that he or she does not want to. Are you in favor of this adjustment?
Room divided
At the moment it is still arranged that every adult must register himself as a donor. But with the new private member’s bill, which was surprisingly adopted by the House of Representatives in 2016, that is about to change – if it actually passes the Senate. Two years ago, the law received a majority (75 to 74) at the last minute because a Member of Parliament who wanted to vote against did not attend the vote in time. If there is an equal number of votes, a new law will die before it is discussed in the Senate.
Sensitive issue
It indicated how divided the House of Representatives is on the subject. It is therefore questionable whether the law will pass the Senate. But it is not only a difficult and sensitive subject for politicians, it is something that concerns us all. Is it good to automatically make every adult Dutch person a donor, unless an explicit objection is made? Even with the new law, organ donation can still be stopped by the next of kin.
We are curious what you think of the possible new donor law. Cast your vote and leave a comment below!
