A hairdressing salon, a supermarket, a cinema, a pétanque court. In the village Alzheimer’s ideal, desired by Henri Emmanuelli, PS deputy of the Landes, it would lack nothing to make the residents happy. The socialist wants proof of this in the first village in Europe created for Alzheimer’s patients. In the municipality of Weesp, about twenty kilometers from Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, residents who suffer from dementia live peacefully in this new kind of retirement home.
The socialist would like to reproduce in the Landes department this model of alternative care for Alzheimer’s patients. He hopes to obtain the green light from the State to set up a village by 2017. Since June 2014, a feasibility study has been launched. A French delegation was sent to the Netherlands to observe the operation of this village and to draw inspiration from it in France.
With an area of between 1 and 1.5 hectares, the French version should accommodate 152 patients who would be accompanied by 150 qualified health professionals.
An investment of 23 million euros
Unlike conventional retirement homes, it will be “impossible to identify the staff” in order to “register patients in a standardized landscape of social life”, underlines Michel Laforcade, director of the Aquitaine Regional Health Agency. , quoted by AFP. Stated objective: “to improve the quality of life while reducing the consumption of drugs” for patients.
In each district, residents will have available three psychologists, two doctors, 2 physiotherapists, 2 occupational therapists, two nurses and 16 facilitators, specifies France evening.
The project is well done. It remains to obtain the necessary financing to carry it out. The total envelope is estimated at 23 million euros. It would be financed by Social Security, the Landes department and residents (60 euros per day).
