The key to success may be hidden on social networks. Computers have deciphered the common points of the great businessmen of this world.
It’s a well-kept secret of those who have made it to the highest-paid rankings. And it has just been decrypted by an army of computers. Using algorithms of machine learning, researchers from the Queensland University of Technology (Australia) have analyzed the personality of the greatest entrepreneurs on the planet. And it would seem that the messages posted on Twitter say a lot about what makes them successful.
More ambition
Thousands of tweets from celebrities such as Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and Elon Musk have been screened. A total of 106 celebrities featured in the magazine’s wealthiest rankings Forbes and Fortune have been selected.
“The objective was to better understand what constitutes the entrepreneurial spirit, how they see the work, how they succeed”, summarizes Professor Martin Obshonka, co-author of this work published in the Journal of Business Venturing Insights.
And the results are quite surprising. Globally known CEOs display more entrepreneurial traits than true entrepreneurs. In their tweets, they show more openness to new ideas, ambition and self-confidence.
An unstable innovator
The messages of entrepreneurs correspond more to the idea that we would have of an innovative personality: open to new experiences, they also show themselves to be more independent.
But one personality caught the attention of the Australian researcher: that of Donald Trump. The President of the United States was first a recognized businessman. And he shows all the signs, according to the study published in Small Business Economics. In short, his tweets refer to an “emotionally unstable innovator”.
On the financial level, the character of the billionaire has everything to please. Enthused by unconventional solutions, he has a pronounced competitive spirit, integrates social codes and adheres to the values of Machiavellianism. And this more than other contractors of comparable size.
A double edge
But this tenacity risks being a double-edged sword now that Donald Trump is president. Because the businessman’s tweets also have a dark side: he has trouble controlling his emotions and shows instability in this area. Which makes him a “creatively destructive” personality.
“Being determined, independent and creative while breaking the rules can be beneficial for an entrepreneur, but more unusual in the sphere of high-level politicians, especially when this trait is associated with a high level of neurosis”, underlines Prof. Obschonka. This mindset could spur innovation in the United States as well as frustrate diplomacy, they say.
