Indeed, this study reveals that a third of adults in France smoke, every day or occasionally: 31.9% of 18-75 year olds, 35.2% of men and 28.7% of women. This decrease was marked among young men aged 18 to 24 (from 44.2% to 35.3%) and women aged 55 to 64.
Minors less and less affected by smoking
This study reveals that minors and adolescents smoke less and less. In fact, only one in four adolescents (25.1%) and 6 in 10 17-year-old adolescents (59.0%) disclosed having smoked at least one cigarette in their lifetime, compared to 77.6% in 2000. .
A decrease in the number of disadvantaged smokers
Among the most disadvantaged smokers, there is a decrease in the number of addicts. They go from 38.8% in 2016 to 34.0% in 2017 and from 49.7% to 43.5% among the unemployed.
For Public Health France, “this historic drop is part of a strong context of the fight against smoking, with the implementation of major measures of the National Plan for the Reduction of Smoking (PNRT) in 2016 and a prevention strategy ever closer to smokers: launch of Mois Sans Tabac, creation of the new Tobacco Info Service application with health insurance”.
On the other hand, the study highlights the sharp increase in the consumption of roll-your-own tobacco since 2010, which now affects nearly 20% of smokers, which suggests “an increase in the price of roll-your-own tobacco”.
