One concern is raised: antiperspirants and deodorants are not considered carcinogenic to the breast.
The report from the Agency for the Safety of Health Products (Afssaps) is reassuring: to smell good where it is needed, without risk of cancer, it is possible! The Afssaps thus removes the doubt that hung over these products for daily use. She says: “Analysis of animal studies could not show a link between cancer and exposure to aluminum through the skin.”
But what is toxic about antiperspirants and deodorants? Their components or the fact of blocking perspiration?
These are the products they contain in particular, aluminum salts which are in fairly large quantities in antiperspirants. The effectiveness comes from the fact that their tiny spheres block the channels through which perspiration flows.
But many other cosmetic products also contain aluminum. For now, L’Afssaps has only been interested in antiperspirants and it still has a downside.
That would mean that there is a notion of aluminum dose not to be exceeded, why?
Because in animals, administration in repeated doses may have effects on the neurological system, on the testes and on the embryo. And in humans who suffer from kidney problems and therefore do not eliminate aluminum well, damage to bones, neurons or red blood cells can be observed. But we are a long way from breast cancer. Additional studies will still be carried out and will make it possible to refine the recommendations.
What recommendations should be retained today?
To limit the risks of exposure, Afssaps recommends first of all not to use antiperspirants and deodorants containing aluminum on skin irritated or scratched by micro-cuts or prior shaving. These lesions indeed increase the absorption of aluminum. It also recommends restricting the concentration of this product to 0.6% in antiperspirants or deodorants. Two pieces of information that must therefore appear on their labels. But do not rush to your bottle, for the moment this figure is not mentioned yet.
