An ointment deodorant, from the Nuud brand, is withdrawn from sale due to a risk of underarm cysts.
- Several people have reported developing underarm cysts after using Nuud, an ointment deodorant.
- ANSM investigations have shown that this is one of the possible adverse effects linked to the use of this deodorant.
- The products have been withdrawn from sale.
It was a product recommended by influencers: Nuud brand deodorant, praised for its effectiveness over several days and its concentrated format. It will no longer be possible to buy it in France, neither online nor in stores. Wednesday September 6,National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) announced that the manufacturer was withdrawing its product from the market due to painful cysts occurring in people who had used it.
Nuud deodorant: how to explain the appearance of cysts in the armpits?
“Users of this deodorant have reported adverse effects such as painful cysts in the armpits, sometimes accompanied by an infection treated with antibiotics”, develops the organism. However, these cysts when accompanied by inflammation or infection can be dangerous for people more vulnerable to infections, such as those suffering from Verneuil’s disease, a condition characterized by the formation of nodules, or for individuals allergic to antibiotics.
“In most reported cases, the cysts disappeared after stopping use of the product or taking prescribed treatments.” According to the ANSM, the appearance of these cysts is linked to the form of the deodorant, called galenic: it is an oily ointment in a tube, which is applied directly to the armpit. However, this would favor “blockage of the pores of the sweat glands”, either the sweat-producing glands, located under the armpits, “with the possibility of microbial superinfection, through an occlusive effect”. On the other hand, the agency specifies that the ingredients are not considered, individually, as responsible for these adverse effects.
Armpit cyst: what to do if you use this deodorant?
If you have this deodorant, the ANSM recommends that you stop using it. “If you nevertheless wish to continue using the product, you must strictly follow the manufacturer’s conditions of use.”, warns the organization. In his communicated, Nuud provides the following advice: one application should not be exceeded every two days to limit the risk of clogged pores, the deodorant should not be used directly after shaving or waxing, nor on skin irritated or hurt. “The product should not be applied in situations that favor maceration (for example in cases of obesity, concomitant hair removal or Verneuil’s disease)”, warns the manufacturer. If a sign of inflammation appears or a cyst forms, the application should be stopped immediately. In this case, the ASNM recommends notifying your treating physician and declaring the side effect on the dedicated portal. For its part, the Nuud brand claims to be working on a new formulation of the product, less greasy.
