Algae with an exceptional nutritional composition, the spirulina has been awarded by the World Health Organization the title of best food for humanity in the 21st century. It has therefore joined the ranks of what are called “super foods”. Green in color, it has existed in its natural state for millennia on our planet.
Today, it is produced in places in the world where the climate allows it. Its wealth in proteinsin antioxidantsand in omega-6 justifies its excellent nutritional reputation. Detoxifying, it helps rebalance the body.
Spirulina is a good protein supplement
“ For malnourished people, for example the elderly, spirulina powder can be added to puree type foods because it is a good protein supplement. It contains a large number of amino acids, therefore also interesting for vegetarians who do not consume animal proteins where these acids are found », indicates the Dr Laurent Chevallier, nutritionist.
Rich in iron, it helps fight against fatigue
It is also full of iron well assimilated by the body. A mineral particularly useful in cases of fatigue. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, those in periods of menstruation who eliminate a lot of blood, and therefore iron at the same time, have every interest in carrying out small cures of spirulina.
Spirulina is low in calories
Low in calories, it is also believed to have virtues slimming. On this point, nothing is obvious. “It is indeed a superfood but it is not its role to help with weight loss. There is no scientific proof of this. We sometimes speak of a appetite suppressant effectbut it is not proven », tempers the expert. This reputation which circulates in numerous advertisements relating to spirulina results from the high protein content of this algae. However, proteins are known to satiate and cause a feeling of satiety. From there to taking it to lose weight, there is a step not to be taken. However, we must not forget its other virtues and its interest. And therefore use it only for its contribution in various nutrients.
