The beautiful days are here, the warmer nights. Sleeping naked has many benefits: falling asleep faster, increasing libido, improving fertility and self-esteem…. Why Doctor takes stock.
- Sleeping naked is good for your health.
- Several studies have shown that sleeping naked improves health and quality of life.
- But only 10% of French people do it.
Only 10% of French people sleep naked. And yet, seven scientific reasons explain why it is good for your health to sleep in the simplest device.
Fall asleep faster, have prettier skin… visible benefits
You’re more likely to fall asleep quickly if you’re naked. Indeed, body temperature is one of the factors of the proper functioning of the circadian rhythm also called biological clock. It changes during the day and decreases during the evening. This is why you feel a drop in energy beyond a certain time. By sleeping naked, your body temperature will drop faster and help you fall asleep more easily. Overheated rooms and pajamas are therefore to be avoided.
The drop in body temperature also stimulates the production of melatonin, the anti-aging hormone. It allows the regeneration of cells, thus improving the quality of the skin and hair.
Being naked also allows the body to breathe, reducing sweat and humidity, which reduces the development of bacteria and infections, especially vaginal in women. The vagina is a warm and humid environment, ideal for the development of bacteria. Sleeping naked allows some of the vaginal heat and moisture to escape during the night, and helps reduce the risk of yeast infections. Opt for cotton sheets rather than less breathable synthetic sheets.
Sleeping naked is good for libido and male fertility
As you can probably guess, sleeping naked can motivate your partner and help keep the flame burning. According to one investigation conducted in the United Kingdom in 2014 among 1,000 married couples, 57% of naked sleepers say they are ” very happy “ of their relationship, compared to 48% of those who sleep clothed. “There are many factors that can affect the success of a relationship but one very important factor is the bedroom environment.“, said researcher Stephanie Thiers-Ratcliffe, who worked on this study..
In addition, in 2018, researchers carried out a study of 656 men and found that those who wore baggy boxer shorts produced more sperm than those who wore tight underwear. Probably because loose underwear helps keep the testicles cool and with tight underwear the temperature of the scrotum rises and can negatively affect sperm production. Thus, sleeping naked allows the testicles to ventilate at night, which increases sperm production.
A other study, also published in 2018, demonstrated that participating in “naturist activities” can improve quality of life, body image and self-esteem. Presumably this also applies to sleeping naked.
The role of growth hormone
Finally, when you sleep in nightwear or under a big duvet, you limit the production of growth hormone, or somatotropin. You burn less fat during the night and your muscle recovery is of lower quality. Conversely, sleeping naked allows you to move freely and regulate levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can lower blood pressure, boost appetite and libido.
And to end on an ecological note, if you sleep naked, there are no more pajamas to wash and therefore less consumption of detergent and water.
