Five, four, three, your eyelids are heavy … You sink deliciously and safely into sleep. Upon awakening, no disturbance in attention or memory, as sometimes happens after taking a sleeping pill.
How can you sleep better without sleeping pills when you have an insomniac? The secret is a hypnosis session. A new study published in the scientific journal Sleep shows that even the most sleep-resistant minds get carried away by hypnotic trances. Researchers from the Universities of Zurich and Friborg performed the test on 70 women (and not men, as women are said to be more receptive to hypnosis). Without being all convinced by this alternative medicine, the patients all agreed to take a 90-minute nap in a sleep laboratory. They were separated into two groups so that one part listened to 13 minutes of pre-recorded hypnosis before sleeping and the other part a neutral text.
Result: the most receptive to hypnosis observed an 80% improvement in their deep sleep, the most restorative phase of sleep. It is indeed during this period that the activity of the brain and the body slows down, which allows you to rest.
The study also points to the virtues of hypnosis to regulate the circadian rhythm, and to manage to fall earlier in the arms of Morpheus.
Other applications of hypnosis
For researchers, hypnosis should be recommended more than sleeping pills, which carry risks of misuse and side effects. “This opens up new and promising opportunities for better quality sleep without the use of sleeping pills,” enthuses Björn Rasch, biopyschologist and author of the study.
Useful against sleep disorders, hypnosis interests health professionals for other applications. In France, it has been practiced for a few years in some hospitalsfor example before certain operations to replace general anesthesia and calm the patient. But hypnosis is also used to treat addictions, eating disorders, stress, etc.
