Eating breakfast at the same time every morning reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Especially in children.
Parents: Your child’s breakfast is important. And not just so that he can concentrate in class until lunch, but also because it is essential for his health. This notably reduces his risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is what a study published in Plos Medicine.
Risks increased by 26%
Doctors at the University of London have followed more than 4,000 children between the ages of 9 and 10. They were asked simple questions about their frequency and the content of their breakfast. Blood tests were then performed to assess their carbohydrate level and insulin resistance. Researchers have found that the rate of insulin resistance is 26% higher in children who do not eat breakfast every day. “Those who skip breakfast thus see their risk factors for type 2 diabetes increase”, explain the authors of the study.
A substantial breakfast would limit the risks
Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that lowers blood sugar and promotes the use of sugar by cells. Lack of insulin in the body causes an abnormal buildup of glucose in the tissues and blood, which causes diabetes.
According to the authors of the study, a breakfast rich in protein, carbohydrates and grains would better control insulin levels in the body.
“Regular consumption of a hearty breakfast therefore protects against the risk of developing this disease,” concludes Dr. Angela Donin, lead author of the study. However, the latter specifies that analyzes are necessary to determine from what threshold the intakes of the first meal of the day could protect the child from the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
In 2013, a study by the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions (Credoc) indicates that nearly one in three children (29%) skip at least one breakfast per week.
