Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers
I am a 66 year old woman and have had light spots on my arms and legs for many years. According to the doctor I have pityriasis versicolor and I can use selenium sulfide suspension for that. Should I attack the spots, or take them for granted?
Pityriasis versicolor is a harmless skin condition caused by a yeast. This yeast can affect the top layer of the skin. The formation of pigment is disrupted and spots appear as a result. Fine flakes appear on the spots, sometimes difficult to see. The itching is usually minor, the spots are not contagious. If you find the cosmetic effect annoying, you can use the agent selenium sulfide. This kills the yeast on the skin and prevents new spots from forming. Selenium sulfide is available as a shampoo, because it also works against dandruff. A prescription from the doctor is not necessary. The treatment lasts seven days, after which new pigment can be formed under the influence of sunlight. The shampoo has an unpleasant smell, but is safe. The choice to use it is yours.
