Today, only the smear can detect cervical cancer. A team of researchers from the University of Manchester is currently working on the development of a urine test. Explanations.
A urine test to replace the smear?
Many women dread going to their gynecologist for a smear. However, this test is essential to screen for cervical cancer. In France it is advised to women aged 25 to 65 to do it every 3 years. But will this still be valid in the coming years? Researchers are indeed on the trail of a new test, much less invasive than the smear.
It would be a test carried out from urine. To develop it, researchers at the University of Manchester called on the participation of 104 women. Once the material was received, they were able to perform this test at home. And the result was more than convincing since these urine analyzes proved to be as effective as conventional smears.
Cervical cancer: screening is essential
An encouraging result according to Dr. Emma Crosbie, principal investigator of this study who considers that the latter ” has the potential to dramatically increase uptake rates for cervical cancer screening »Report our colleagues from the BBC. Nevertheless, the scientist recalls thatit is still necessary to carry out further tests before putting this urine test on the market.
” In the meantime, women should continue to make their screening appointments when called. It’s a test that saves lives »Says Emma Crosbie. In France, cervical cancer is the 12th most common cancer in women and it claims more than 1,100 victims each year.
