The years 2000-2010 are both very close to us… and very distant. From the “everything minivan” to CD players via diesel city cars or black and white GPS, some of the fashions of the time may seem very outdated to us. Let’s take a look back.
The automobile is evolving at an ever-increasing speed. While diesel was king just ten years ago, including on city cars, today it seems on the way to being overtaken by electric power quickly, before disappearing forever. Convertibles have become rare and have almost all returned to the canvas top. While families shun the latest minivans to rush to SUVs, even SUV-coupes. As for our multimedia systems, at the rate things are going, one wonders if their touch screens will not end up becoming larger than the television that sits in our living room! In this context, we would almost forget that barely twenty years ago, some GPS had to make do with a black and white screen displaying simple arrows… Embark with us on a journey in the years 2000-2010, to discover all these old fashions which today may seem very outdated.

Outdated technologies

In some cases, it is simply technological evolution that has pushed certain equipment towards the exit. To listen to music in the car, for example, streaming platforms now reign supreme. Some recalcitrants still prefer a “good old” USB key, while others continue to favor radio, FM or DAB. But for the inconsolable of the CD player, the only solution is now most often the occasion. After chasing cassettes from the 1990s until they became essential, this equipment has almost disappeared from the new market. It is true that transporting these fragile cookies that clutter the cabin with you was not necessarily the most practical… After having abandoned monochrome, multimedia systems have gradually abandoned non-touch screens and often dials. unintuitive, like that of the first BMW iDrive. While the single-clutch robotic gearboxes, then presented as the ultimate, now find themselves shunned on occasion because of their slowness, sometimes brutal operation and frequent lack of reliability.
Changing aesthetic tastes

Fashion is also often a matter of aesthetics. The bands, numbers and other stickers on the bodywork are thus much less trendy today than ten years ago. Even if the Citroën Ami quadricycle today uses this artifice to compensate for the absence of several colors in its catalog. SUVs, for their part, have almost all given up carrying their spare wheel in a backpack, except for the toughest among them. As for the bullbars, it was the legislation that pushed them out: they were much more dangerous for pedestrians than really effective against these bovids, it is true that they are quite rare in our regions… On the other hand, it is again the technology that has dramatically changed the look of our cars. Halogen or Xenon headlights have indeed been gradually supplanted by diodes… even if the first daytime running lights using LEDs, with their Christmas garland aspect, can now make you smile!
MPVs and coupé-cabriolets, forgotten stars

Finally, in the automotive world, it is sometimes even entire categories that become victims of fashion. In the wake of the success of the Mercedes SLK and Peugeot 206 CC, most manufacturers have seen the addition of a coupé-cabriolet to their range. Before backpedaling often quickly, in front of generally disappointing sales. Even the presence of diesel engines under the bonnet of most of these models, which seemed as logical at the time as it may seem incongruous today, was not enough to retain customers for a long time. Minivans also had their moment of glory, to the point of influencing the silhouette of sedans like the Peugeot 307 and the first 308. But this craze faded as buyers flocked to SUVs. It remains to be seen, now, if these will also end up going out of fashion… We let you tell us what you think of them in our comments or on social networks.
