The heart attack represents 44,500 declared deaths per year in France. Men are twice as affected as women (one in 8 deaths compared to one in 10 among women). Myocardial infarction mainly affects people aged 65 to 85 (45%). A study has shown that omega-3s reduce the risk of contracting the disease.
Fatty acids for our well-being
Fatty acids, contained in large quantities in certain fish, would reduce the risk of dying from a heart attack by 10%. A study was conducted by scientists and discovered a new virtue in omega-3. Published Monday, June 27, 2016 in the American journal JAMA medical internship, the study is actually made up of 19 studies from 16 countries. Researchers have tried to establish a link between omega-3s and the frequency of heart attacks.
These 19 studies combined represent a total sample of 45,637 people. Of these, 7,973 had a heart attack for the first time and 2,781 died. In addition, 7,157 people have had non-fatal heart attacks.
Often people who have a heart attack die for lack of early intervention with cardiac massage or a defibrillator. In 70% of cases, heart attacks occur in front of witnesses, but only 20% of them know the actions necessary for the patient’s survival.
The result is the same for everyone
American researchers studied blood samples from patients to observe the link between omega-3 and heart attack. Participants also provided information on their consumption of oily fish. And the result is clear: the consumption of omega-3, regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, the presence of diabetes or the use of aspirin, is associated with a 10% decrease in cardiac mortality.
However, no correlation was found between blood markers of omega-3 and reduced risk of non-fatal heart attacks. Scientists therefore suggest that there are more specific mechanisms between these molecules and lower cardiac mortality.
It is therefore good to eat salmon, sardines or anchovies because they are fish rich in omega-3, vitamin D, selenium and other minerals beneficial to health.
