It has become a tradition at Land Rover: since 2005, the Range Sport “democratizes” and energizes the novelties brought to the upper floor by the Range Rover. What will it be with this third opus? The argus takes stock.
The third version of the Range Rover Sport is approaching. It should be unveiled in the spring for an arrival on the market at the end of the year. Do not expect major changes in proportions. It’s all about details, smoother surfaces and careful aerodynamics at the A, B and C pillars. A recipe already used on the upper floor with the Range Rover, the fifth generation of which was presented on last year and will be released in the spring (see our video below). The filiation between the two jewels of the English brand will thus always be skilfully maintained.
Also, not surprisingly, the new Range Sport will refine its look and get high-tech headlights, with micro-mirrors capable of identifying up to sixteen moving objects simultaneously. The grille will simplify its contours and the front bumper will be smoothed while retaining air intakes with a slightly more aggressive design than on the big brother Range Rover. In the range, the roles are clearly assigned: classicism for the “large”, dynamism for the “small”. The latter also having the habit of charging slightly less salty prices.
No vertical lights for the Range Sport
The design of the stern will also be refined, but not question for the Range Sport to resume the vertical lights which will remain the prerogative of the Range Rover. A particularity that dates from the first version, the one that invented the concept of the premium SUV, in 1970. The 2022 Range Rover Sport will prefer to sport a black lacquered strip crossing the tailgate flap framed by slim lights, while the plate mineralogical will migrate lower.
On board technology, the pavilion will be capped at the rear by two shark fin type antennas, a duality necessary to capture 5G. On board the Range Sport, in the vein of the Range Rover, there will be no multiplication of screens galore. On the contrary, the brand will even backtrack. There will always be a slab in front of the driver and another in the center of the dashboard, but the one that was just below on the current model, to control the air conditioning in particular, will not be renewed.
A 100% electric Range Sport?
The main modification will not be visible, and for good reason. It will be a unprecedented modular technical platform called MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture). A novelty once again released by the Range “very short”. Under the hood, the range of engines will revolve around six-cylinder diesel engines (D250 and D350) delivering powers of 250 and 350 hp respectively, as well as two plug-in hybrid variants (P440e and P510e) of which we do not know for the moment that the cumulative powers: 440 hp and 510 hp, for a range in electric mode of around 80 km. At the top of the offer, we will find a V8 petrol (P530) 4.4 liter Twin Turbo of BMW origin, delivering 530 hp, in place of the old 5 liter compressor house, too greedy to survive. Subsequently, the Range Rover Sport SVR will use the same Bavarian mechanics by boosting it to more than 600 hp. Finally, Land Rover having formalized the arrival in 2024 of a 100% electric Range Rover, it would be very surprising if the “little” sporty brother was not also entitled to a plug-in version.
