Researchers from Osaka University (Japan) studied the television viewing habits of 86,000 people and monitored their health for 19 years. This allowed them to observe that each slice of two hours spent without moving in front of the television screen increases the risk pulmonary embolism by 40%. And people who watch TV for more than 5 hours a day are twice as likely to die as those who watch it for less than 2.5 hours.
Admittedly, the overall risk remains low (59 pulmonary embolisms out of the 86,000 people followed) but the scientists still do not want to minimize it.
A disease closely linked to inactivity
“These days, with the streaming of videos online, we spend more and more time in front of screens. And pulmonary embolism is a dangerous disease, closely linked to inactivity. It starts with a clot forming in the leg but which becomes dangerous if it breaks free and moves towards the lungs” explains Dr. Toru Shirakawa, one of the study’s authors.
The researchers therefore recommend taking precautions similar to those recommended during long plane trips: practice stretching sessions every hour, walk while watching television. Or more simply, if they want to spend time in front of their screens, go instead play pokemon go !
