Infants on bail. Virginia Adhiamba, a 26-year-old Kenyan mother who has just given birth to four boys, has been forced to leave two of her newborn babies in hospital because she cannot pay hospital fees that have ballooned due to of complications. A heartbreak for this young woman who gave birth on the 1er last February.
Complications after childbirth
A few weeks ago, the young mother was far from suspecting that her childbirth was going to force her to separate, at least for a time, from two of her infants. “I had the best pregnancy I could have hoped forrecalls the young woman in remarks relayed by the Daily Star. No complications. Everything seemed fine until my water broke.”
Her four boys – Jack, Malik, Micah and Teddy – were born perfectly healthy but Virginia Adhiamba had complications within hours of giving birth. “My legs and stomach swelled up and I got a serious infection that couldn’t be treated with medication.she explains. My blood count dropped, so I received a blood transfusion, but developed a reaction. It took me to the intensive care unit.”
A growing bill
His hospitalization at Nairobi South Hospital lasted five weeks for an estimated total cost of nearly 30,000 euros. A sum that is impossible for him to pay as it stands. To be able to return home, she therefore concluded a deal with the management of the hospital: to leave two of her four boys as pledges until the payment of the debt.
With her companion and father of her children, Charles, she has since been working to collect the money through a fundraiser launched with those around her. “Micah and Teddy went home with us, but Jack and Malik are still in the hospital.she says. They should be out this week if we can raise the funds, but the longer they stay there the bigger the bill.”
