According to a study led by Dr. Roger Ho, of the New York State School of Medicine (USA), which analyzed the records of participants in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) from 2009 to 2012, people with psoriasis would not only be affected in their bodies. Due to this disease visible to the naked eye (some parts of the body are covered with red patches or even scabs) patients also have an increased risk depression.
According to this study, 16.5% of “pso” suffer from severe depression. They are also more likely to have suicidal thoughts.
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that can appear in several forms. The most common being plaque psoriasis. It is characterized by red patches, well limited, thick, covered with whitish scales, which are preferentially located on the scalp, the elbows, the knees and the lumbar region. This repulsive aspect explains why many people who do not know what this disease is confuse with dirt.
According to Dr. Ho, it is normal for patients, who endure this rejection on a daily basis in the world of work and sometimes in the life of a couple and family, to fall more easily into depression.
24% of them consider that their discomfort causes a daily functional limitation. Among patients in good physical health, only 15% think the same thing.
