Several batches of oysters were recalled throughout France between December 30 and January 2. Seafood is suspected of being contaminated with norovirus. The latter can cause acute gastroenteritis.
- Noroviruses are the main causes of acute gastroenteritis in humans, all age groups combined.
- The excretion of noroviruses in the stools can be significant: up to 1011 particles/g of stools. It is also likely to last over time: two to three weeks after the symptoms disappear.
- The term Norovirus is a recent name. It unites a group of viruses previously known as Norwalk, Norwalk-like or Calicivirus viruses.
If you have any New Year’s oysters left or are planning to eat them in the next few days, be careful! 14 batches of oysters as well as certain shellfish have been the subject of a product recall, warns the government site Drink reminder. The reason ? Molluscs are contaminated with a norovirus, the main cause of acute gastroenteritis.

Health authorities are asking not to consume the recalled seafood. The following batches are concerned:

Norovirus: what are the risks?
Norovirus infections can occur year round. However, 80% of cases are recorded between November and April. They are often caused by the consumption of contaminated food. Nevertheless, human-to-human transmission is possible, as the virus is highly contagious. The incubation period can be up to 48 hours.
Norovirus causes gastroenteritis, the symptoms of which are vomiting and diarrhea frequently accompanied by moderate fever. The authorities invite people who have eaten the oysters concerned by the recall showing these signs “to consult their attending physician and inform him of this consumption”. “Immunocompromised people should be particularly attentive to these symptoms, which may suggest infection by a virus (Norovirus)”adds the caveat.
