For babies to be healthy, more muscular and stronger, more vitamin D should be consumed during pregnancy, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
A study from the University of Southampton (United Kingdom) found a link between vitamin D consumption during pregnancy and muscle mass and good health in babies.
The researchers compared the vitamin D intake during pregnancy of 700 women and the muscle growth and health of their children.
Nicholas Harvey, researcher at the University of Southampton and director of the study says in this study that “Vitamin D has an effect on the way muscle fibers develop in the womb, which allows babies to be stronger later. “
He found that toddlers whose mothers took vitamin D during their pregnancy had a firm grip and greater muscle mass than others. And that these health benefits are long lasting. In fact, by the age of four, these children were stronger, less susceptible to falls, and with stronger bones than others. They were also better protected against diabetes.
Vitamin D prevents many diseases
But vitamin D is important throughout life, not just during pregnancy. While vitamin D is essential in preventing osteoporosis, it also prevents cardiovascular disease by protecting the arteries from inflammation and calcification.
According to an American study published in the journal Neurology, vitamin D would also protect against multiple sclerosis. Researchers from the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) have observed that women with a high vitamin D level (greater than 27 µg / l) see their risk of developing breast cancer decrease by 25%.
If vitamin D is mainly found in oily fish, egg yolks and organ meats, it is mainly produced by our body when our skin is exposed to the sun.
In case of vitamin D insufficiency, it is recommended to consult a doctor who will establish an appropriate medical prescription.
