Porsche celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Porsche Design studio with a limited series of the 911, a restored and modified 1972 Targa, a fashion collection as well as an exhibition in its museum in Stuttgart.
In 1972, Porsche founded Porsche Design. An initiative that we owe to Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche, grandson of the founder and chief designer of the original 911, and his brother Hans-Peter. Through this studio, the German manufacturer designs and markets all kinds of objects such as watches, pens, clothing and fashion accessories or electronic devices. Third-party companies also call on Porsche Design to create products for markets ranging from household appliances to real estate and sporting goods. Porsche Design is therefore 50 years old in 2022. To celebrate this anniversary, the Stuttgart firm is presenting two matching commemorative vehicles.

A limited edition 992 Targa
As part of the Sonderwunsch bespoke personalization program launched last spring, Porsche has designed a special series of 911 Targa 4 GTS type 992. Its black body, its black and white upholstery in checkered fabric and the red hand of the central watch included in the Sport Chrono pack (standard) are part of the canons of Porsche Design. Platinum-coloured stripes on the sides carry the inscription “Porsche Design”, the central arch sports a similar finish, and the ventilation grille of the engine cover is flanked by a badge designed for the occasion.
In the passenger compartment, there are door sills and headrests stamped “Porsche Design 50”, the “Butzi” signature sewn on the central armrest, as well as a relief emphasizing in front of the passenger that it is a a limited series. Only 750 copies of the 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design will be produced. It is available to order in France for €193,081, around €23,500 more than a standard Targa 4 GTS. The first deliveries are scheduled for next April. Porsche is offering buyers of the special edition a watch called Chronograph I – 1972 Limited Edition, inspired by the Chronograph I designed by “Butzi” in 1972, for the modest sum of €10,750. At the same time, Porsche Design is launching a collection of Clothes and accessories celebrating its 50th anniversary.
A more than restored 911 Targa from 1972
The other car unveiled to mark five decades of Porsche Design’s existence is a 1972 911 2.4 Targa restored and modified by the Porsche Classic teams, a job that took two years. This unique model features the same finish as the commemorative 992, both inside and out. Under his hood, the flat-six was reworked to adopt the specifications of the Model S of the time, which notably went through the installation of a mechanical injection system in order to bring the power to 190 hp, against 130 hp for the block with two original carburettors.

An exhibition for the 50 years of Porsche Design
This Targa is on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart as part of an exhibition dedicated to 50 years of Porsche Design, which runs until July 11, 2022. The Chronograph I is presented there in two versions with other watches of the same only sunglasses, a pipe, a cell phone, and other notable studio items.
On the vehicle side, you can discover the 911 Speedster type 993 from “ Butzi », one of two examples made, and the 904 that the designer considered his masterpiece.
