The list of exhibitors at the Paris Motor Show has not yet been communicated, but some manufacturers such as the BMW and Volkswagen groups have already chosen not to participate in the show, which will return in October 2022 after four years. of absence. The Renault group, on the other hand, will be there.
Barely announced, already deserted? Such is the legitimate fear that we can have about the Mondial de l’Auto de Paris 2022. The major French biennial show will return from October 18 to 23 after a 2020 edition canceled due to the pandemic, but the shows traditional were already threatened before the health crisis and the latter did not help matters. According to our information, several major car manufacturers will ignore on the Parisian event this year.

The BMW group absent from the World Cup
The BMW group will not participate in the 2022 World Cup, not even with its Mini brand which will however begin its transformation next year with a new generation of models boosting its strategy of massive electrification. It is therefore not in Paris that the concept of compact electric SUV announced for this year will be unveiled, nor the next city car from the British manufacturer whose development is nearing completion. On the side of the BMW brand, the major novelties of the coming months are called M3 Touring, 7 Series and XM but they too will therefore shun the City of Light. ” We prefer to showcase our products at our own #NextGen event, held at BMW Welt in Munich (every year since 2019 and accompanied by online presentations, Ed)”, we are told by the Bavarian firm. BMW France specifies, however, ” support local distributors at the 2022 Lyon Motor Show, which will be held from April 7-11 and will remain focused on selling rather than revealing new vehicles.
Its BMW Motorsport sports department has, on the other hand, confirmed its presence at the Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance and the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in May, at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed in June and at the Pebble Concours d’Élégance. Beach in August to reveal some surprises related to its 50and birthday.
Volkswagen not convinced by Paris
Another giant that will cross Paris without stopping there: the Volkswagen group. The German ogre with nine car manufacturers (not counting Italdesign, Ducati, buses and heavy goods vehicles, etc.), world number 2 behind Toyota in terms of sales in 2021, does not seem to have found its account in a possible participation in the World Cup despite the promise of the organizers of the show to pay attention to return on investment for its exhibitors.
The abandonment of shows by manufacturers and by the public, two dynamics that maintain each other reciprocally, is largely linked to their high cost for manufacturers who record too few orders there to find profitability. Because at the same time, the development of targeted digital communication, further accentuated by the restrictions linked to covid-19, and the exclusive exhibition at a lower cost of events organized internally, have enabled brands to find more effective alternatives. The current context does not invite manufacturers to spend either as they struggle to produce cars and the launch schedules for new products slip with shortages.
Which French manufacturers at the 2022 World Cup?
All the major manufacturers will not be absent from the 2022 Paris Motor Show, however. On the French side, the Renault group will be there, with the eponymous brand as well as Dacia and Alpine. The presence of brands from the Stellantis group, Peugeot and Citroën in the lead, is not yet assured.
The 2022 Paris Motor Show will be held at the same time and in the same place as the next edition of Equip Auto, the show dedicated to after-sales and automotive services. Both events will be grouped under the Paris Automotive Week banner. The reduced format Mondial will occupy halls 3, 4, 5.1 and 6 of Paris Expo Porte de Versailles while Equip Auto will take up residence in pavilions 1 and 2. The list of exhibitors and activities will be revealed over the coming months. .
