According to ANSES, certain food supplements based on glucosamine or chondroitin sulphate can be harmful to the health of people with diabetes, asthma or heart problems.
In 2018, the food supplement market represented nearly two billion euros in France. However, doctors are increasingly expressing doubts about the effectiveness of these dietary supplements, and even about the health risks they may pose. The National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) advise against somesold to relieve joint pain, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatism.
Digestive disorders, skin problems
Thus, a monitoring device has identified some adverse effects, which could be caused by food supplements based on glucosamine or chrondroitin sulphate. These include liver damage, digestive disorders as well as skin problems, such as itching or purpura. Consequently, ANSES calls for “measures to be taken by manufacturers to better inform consumers of the risks associated with the consumption of these food supplements by these specific populations”.
Not recommended for people at risk
Indeed, some people should avoid consuming these dietary supplements. Among them, diabetics or pre-diabetics, asthmatics as well as people allergic to shellfish or insects (because glucosamine is extracted from shellfish shells). People treated with anti-vitamin K anticoagulants could also suffer from adverse effects. In addition, people with heart failure, who must monitor the sodium content of their diet, should avoid consuming it. These food supplements can be an important source.
Seek advice from your doctor
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also not take it. Because there is not enough information yet on the safety of these products. In total, several million people would be affected. More generally, if you plan to take these food supplements, ask your doctor for advice.
