The probiotics are definitely more and more prized for their health advantage. Likely to influence our appetite, our immunity, our diet or even our mood, some probiotics could even help fight inflammation or obesity.
A diet rich in oily fish, and therefore in “good fats” would thus be more beneficial to the intestinal flora than a diet based on pig fat, according to a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism.
“We wanted to determine whether the gut flora directly contributes to the metabolic differences associated with healthy and unhealthy diets high in fat,” says Robert Caesar, lead author of the study and researcher at Gothenburg University in Sweden. “Our goal is to identify interventions to optimize human metabolic health. “
The research team worked in the laboratory on mice previously fed in a healthy way, to which they transplanted the intestinal flora of other mice, having followed a diet high in fat. Among the latter, one group had been fed fish fat while the second group had received a diet rich in pig fat. These two diets contained the same amount of protein and dietary fiber.
In mice transplanted from mice fed fish fat, the composition of the final gut flora was very different from other mice transplanted from those fed pig fat.
And after 11 weeks of study, the two groups of transplanted mice did not display the same weight or the same type of inflammation. In this sense, probiotics from a diet rich in “good fat” would prevent obesity and inflammation.
In the end, and thanks to additional experiments, the researchers concluded that the microbiota (or intestinal flora) played an important role in promoting the beneficial effects of fish fat, and counterbalancing the negative effects of pig fat.
However, the authors specify that further work will be necessary to determine whether bacteria from the intestinal flora can be administered and in what way, in order to optimize their health benefits.
