Resignations follow at the head of the steering committee of the study on food labeling. The latest, the CEO of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm), Yves Lévy, who left the discussion table. A departure that follows that of three other researchers.
If for the first, no official reason was given to explain this departure of the committee of experts, the newspaper The world recalls that Yves Lévy had expressed “reservations and criticisms on the methodological rigor of the study” without these having been considered by the committee.
Regarding the three other resigners, they would have indicated their dissatisfaction with the “lobbying” of the agro-food industry or the mass distribution.
The five-color code vs industrial labeling system
In the pipeline since the end of 2015, the idea of setting up a nutritional information system is planned as part of the law to modernize the health system. Problem, the members commissioned to carry out the study which must evaluate the different labels are struggling to agree on the same system. While some support the 5-color code, manufacturers offer their own labeling. The debate, tarnished by suspected conflicts of interestand methodological differences, will eventually be resolved.
From next September, the Ministry of Health has planned to test four nutritional logos in real purchasing conditions in supermarkets by consumers. The final objective is therefore to find the right nutritional labeling that facilitates consumer information for a balanced food choice.
