82% of French students consider themselves to be in good health health, according to the survey LMDE mutual published this July 1. Carried out by questionnaire sent out by post between April and June 2014 to 25,000 students aged 18 to 25, the survey received 4,246 responses.
It thus reveals that although they are mostly satisfied with their health, 27% of respondents have already given up on seeing a doctor, accessing care or treatment for financial reasons.
Same mixed observation with regard to sexually transmitted infections (STIs): if 84% of students use the condom to protect themselves, 12% do not take any precautions. Half of the students say they have already taken a screening test in their lifetime and 23% of respondents have done so in the past 12 months, while a screening test is recommended every six months in the absence of a stable partner. Regarding contraception, the pill and condom are the most widely used methods (77% and 53% respectively). Note that the older the students, the less they opt for the pill (79% for those under 20 compared to 69% for those over 25). And if nearly one in two students has already taken the morning-after pill, only 5% of them have already performed a voluntary pregnancy intervention (abortion).
If tobacco seems commonplace among students, only 17% of them smoke every day. For its part, the electronic cigarette does not seem to have convinced smokers: 23% say they have tested it but only 4% of them use it on a daily basis.
In addition, the survey reveals that six out of ten students consider their diet to be balanced. The majority sleep between 7 and 9 hours a night, but 21% of respondents have a sleep time of less than 7 hours. As for alcohol, 54% of students say they have consumed 6 drinks on the same occasion during the year, 33% during the month and 7% every week. In the same sense, the consumption of cannabis is becoming commonplace, since nearly 40% of respondents have already used it, 12% in the last month and 3% on a regular basis, that is to say ten times or more in the past month.
Finally, like a majority of French people, students do not escape the tendency to sedentary lifestyle. Thus, half of the students surveyed do not practice regular physical activity (at least once a week) and a third of them never do sport. However, this trend seems to be more marked among women (37%) than among men (26%).
