October 2, 2003 – Scientists recently endorsed Dr. Atkins’ controversial diet in the US Senate.
Their intervention comes at a time when more and more nutrition experts are concerned about the popularity of such diets, which advocate a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein. These experts point out that some of the foods prohibited by these diets may contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, or other nutrients that are essential for health. (See the PasseportSanté.net article on this subject, dated August 27, 2003).
In addition, no study has yet been carried out to measure the long-term impact on health of these diets.
However, during their testimony before the Senate Consumer Affairs Committee, other experts said that the American food guide, by recommending six to eleven servings of carbohydrates per day, contributes to the obesity epidemic which sweeps across the country. In such a context, Dr. Atkins’ diet, which requires reduced consumption of carbohydrates, seems the ideal solution.
The chairman of the Senate committee has expressed his desire to revise the American food guide to include recommendations that could combat this epidemic of obesity.
