Skoda has just released the official photos of the fourth generation of the Fabia. The cousin of the Volkswagen Polo will join dealerships in the fall of 2021. The larger Czech city car is also more efficient and safer with a whole host of new technologies.
[Mis à jour le 25/08/2021] About her, we already knew almost everything! As usual, Skoda revealed all the information on its new Fabia even before revealing its look. The manufacturer is now putting an end to the suspense. Discover the new and fourth generation of the city car in pictures and down to the smallest detail …
A more aggressive design
Skoda is changing the design of its versatile city car towards more dynamism. If we find the wide grille, it widens further compared to the older generation and forms like a large mouth. The LED headlights (standard) are tapered and more plunging. It almost looks like the Skoda Fabia is frowning! The shield gains more geometric shapes, and the lines are stretched. The detail that kills ?
At the bottom of the front doors, the folds form the triangle of the Czech flag! The car also appears wider. Not just an impression : she gained 5 cm to reach 1.78 m. At the rear, the city car receives horizontal lights that extend from the fenders to the tailgate. The more inclined bezel accentuates the dynamism. Finally, the traditional Skoda badge no longer stands under the rear wiper. The manufacturer’s name is written in full with the name “Fabia” at the bottom right. The cousin of the Volkswagen Polo, with whom it now shares its platform (MQB-A0), has also grown up.
Bigger and more spacious
In her transformation, she took 11 cm and now reaches 4.11 m. It is thus the largest in the category and offers the most generous wheelbase: 2.57 m. Thanks to its new dimensions, the Fabia becomes a compact mini-sedan. The trunk reaches a volume of 380 l, it is 50 l more than the city car it replaces, whose capacity was already the benchmark. Once the bench is folded down, the trunk offers up to 1190 l. Passengers should enjoy good roominess. It only remains to judge from the evidence! Note that they will have aerators for traveling at the right temperature and a panoramic roof (option) for the brightness.
Dimensions of the new Fabia compared to the old one
Length | 4.11 mm (+ 11.1 cm) |
Width | 1.78 m (+ 4.8 cm) |
Height | 1.46 m (- 1 cm) |
Wheelbase | 2.57 m (+ 9.4 cm) |
Chest | 380 (+ 50 l) to 1190 l |
Subsequently, two new versions of the Skoda Fabia, with slightly different dimensions, will appear. One of them, in a more adventurous style, will display a plate raised by 15 mm. The second, more sporty, will have the suspension lowered by 15 mm.
A high-tech interior
The Skoda Fabia unveils a completely redesigned dashboard, which is inspired by the latest productions (Octavia and Enyaq). New decorative fittings (as well as the choice of materials) and customizable LED lighting bring a touch of modernity and luxury. The car is also up to date technologically. Depending on the version, the city car can now receive 100% digital meters on a 10.25 inch slab. The instrumentation cap has been customized with the model name inlay.
A touch screen with a maximum diagonal of 9.2 inches (6.5 ”standard, 8” intermediate), placed like a tablet, adorns the dashboard. The multimedia system is now controlled by voice or with gestures (on the most chic versions). The Fabia is also enriched with equipment such as the heated windshield and steering wheel, a Wi-Fi hot-spot or even an anthology of connected applications. The two-spoke steering wheel already crossed on the older generation is renewed.
Extensive equipment
Three trim levels will be offered at launch (Active, Ambition and Style). The sporty Monte-Carlo variant will be available at a later date. It will opt for a three-spoke steering wheel (with paddles for DSG models) and will offer a “sport” mode. Once the latter has been selected, the tachometer will take a predominant place in the instrument cluster. New colors appear (Phoenix Orange and Graphite Gray), and the catalog is enriched with new rims ranging from 14 to 18 inches.
Unpublished driving assistance Also added to the list of equipment, including Travel Assist with adaptive cruise control and lane keeping, Park Assist, recognition of traffic signs … It must be said that the current generation was starting to date: it was launched in 2014. As for safety, the latest Skoda has up to nine airbags.
Five engines available
The fourth generation of Fabia offers a wider range of engines with five power levels, ranging from 65 to 150 horsepower. As on the current model, diesel is abandoned in favor of 100% gasoline engines. The entry level (65 hp) is only associated with a five-speed manual transmission. When the powerful 150 horsepower 1.5 TSI (just crossed on the Seat Ibiza) automatically receives a seven-speed DSG transmission. This is equipped with a cylinder deactivation technology called ACT. Skoda offers an optional 50 l tank (40 l standard) on the Fabia. In association with the three-cylinder, it would allow the city car to offer up to 900 km of autonomy (WLTP)
The range of engines for the new Fabia
Engines | Power | Couple | Transmission |
1.0 MPI EVO (3-cyl) | 65 hp | 95 Nm | BVM5 |
1.0 MPI EVO (3-cyl) | 80 hp | 95 Nm | BVM5 |
1.0 TSI EVO (3-cyl) | 95 hp | 175 Nm | BVM5 |
1.0 TSI EVO (3-cyl) | 110 hp | 200 Nm | BVM6 or DSG7 |
1.5 TSI EVO (4-cyl) | 150 hp | 250 Nm | DSG7 |
Optimized aerodynamics
Skoda has particularly worked on the aerodynamics and dynamism of the Fabia. The city car has an improved drag coefficient (0.28 against 0.32), a record for the category! Enough to allow it to grab a few centiliters of fuel per 100 km (0.2 l according to the manufacturer). For this, the firm has added active shutters in the front bumper. Side fins have been grafted, and a larger roof spoiler has been added to optimize airflow. The design of the wheels has also been revised, since 25% of the drag is generated by this element alone. Finally, twelve panels (instead of three) now cover the foundations. Beyond aerodynamics, this equipment helps reduce air noise.
Marketing in fall 2021
The Fabia, the second most produced model at Skoda behind the Octavia, will join dealerships in the fall of 2021. The range has not yet been announced for the French market, but prices should remain contained. The Czech city car will be produced in Bratislava (Slovakia) alongside the upcoming Volkswagen Passat. The Kvasiny site in the Czech Republic, where the city car had previously been mounted, will host the station wagon version of the Fabia, the launch of which is announced for 2023.
