While monkeypox affects vaccinated patients, the WHO indicates that it will be necessary to wait for the second dose so that “the vaccine can give an optimal response”.
- To date, in France, 95% of cases for which sexual orientation is provided have occurred among men who have sex with men.
- The Ile-de-France region has the highest number of cases of monkeypox (1,642 or 60%).
Vaccines are not “a quick fix”. These are the words expressed by Rosamund Lewis, in charge of monkeypox at the WHO, when asked about cases of monkeypox detected in vaccinated patients.
700 vaccinations
“We do not expect 100% efficacy of these vaccines for the prevention of monkeypox“, she explained. “You have to wait for the second dose for the vaccine to give an optimal response.”
Currently, vaccination campaigns are intensifying around the world, particularly in France where since the start of the epidemic, more than 700 vaccinations of people considered to be contact at risk have been carried out, indicates the Ministry of Health.
Limit the number of partners
The WHO monkeypox specialist has also called on men in same-sex relationships to limit the number of partners they have in order to stem the spread of the virus. As a reminder, the vast majority of the 2,749 confirmed cases identified in France were detected in gay or bisexual men, according to the latest situation update from Public Health France.
Modes of exposure
WHO experts determined that the monkeypox outbreak was “clearly transmitted during sexual intercourse“, but they had not concluded whether or not it was a sexually transmitted infection. One of the main modes of exposure to this infectious disease is through direct contact, close contact, skin-to-skin contact, possibly even face-to-face contact, exposure to droplets or virus that may be in the mouth.
