A new study is alarmed by the toxicity of 59 substances found in rugs and carpets on the European market.
Contrary to popular belief, pollution does not necessarily come from outside. 59 substances present in rugs and carpets sold within the European Union have just been identified as dangerous to health. According to a new study of the Anthesis group, published by the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) and the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), they could be the cause of cancer, developmental disorders, neurological disorders, asthma and fertility problems.
Flame retardants and heavy metals
More specifically, phthalates, biocides, flame retardants and even heavy metals (lead, mercury) were found in the panel of rugs and carpets analyzed. Only 10 of the 59 toxic substances identified are currently listed by the European Union (EU) as being extremely harmful substances. Four of them are strictly prohibited on the market.
“Carpets, present in many indoor environments, should not expose populations, especially babies and young children who spend a lot of time on the floor, to toxic substances. long-term indoor air quality and reduce harmful exposure to health “, recommends on Medisite Véronique Moreira, president of WECF France, a group of 150 women’s organizations for health and the environment.
Young children and infants
Poisoning, which mainly threatens pregnant women, young children, infants and all those working in the carpet and rug industry, can occur through inhalation or ingestion of dust. Direct contact of toxic substances with the skin and eyes can also be very harmful to health.
The study further specifies that the toxic substances found in the panel of rugs and carpets studied can have a negative impact on health decades after poisoning. The 59 chemicals listed can also end up in other products through recycling processes.
The study therefore recommends that Member States of the European Union and manufacturers of rugs and carpets better protect the health of European citizens, in particular by strengthening the legislation in force.
