Mercedes unveils images of its future large seven-seater electric SUV EQS. It will be built in the United States and equipped with batteries produced a few hundred kilometers from its assembly plant. His presentation is scheduled for April 19.
The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV Concept presented at the 2021 Munich Motor Show foreshadowed the most upscale variant of the brand’s future large electric SUV, which will therefore share its name with the manufacturer’s recent “zero emission” limousine. Mercedes unveils lots of information and pictures of the standard EQS SUV todaywhich will soon top its EQ electric range.
An electric, luxurious and family SUV
The Mercedes EQS SUV will be based, like the EQS and EQE sedans, on the manufacturer’s new modular EVA platform reserved for 100% electric vehicles. The large SUV will have seven seats thanks to an optional third row of seats.
Second row passengers will be entitled to electrically adjustable seats. At the front, we find the interior layout of the EQS sedan; Mercedes will notably offer the giant Hyperscreen slab bringing together a digital dashboard, central touch screen and monitor dedicated to the front passenger, extending over 1.42 m.
Typical Mercedes-EQ styling
The exterior of the EQS SUV remains camouflaged for the time being. It should differ little from the Maybach concept, and therefore adopt curvaceous shapes to reduce aerodynamic drag as much as possible to optimize autonomy. The finished front lights will be integrated into the outline of a full grille; the horizontal taillights will overhang the fenders. The combination of relatively short overhangs and a generous wheelbase enabled by the EVA architecture will benefit both handling and roominess. The offset of the rear fenders will reinforce the visual foundation of the vehicle.

The EQS SUV and its batteries assembled in the United States
The EQS SUV will be produced at Mercedes’ US plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The future EQE SUV will also be assembled there. The batteries – which both models will be equipped with – will be produced in a new factory just inaugurated by Mercedes less than 500 km away, in Bibb County, Georgia.
The launch of this site is the result of a partnership between the German manufacturer and the Chinese battery manufacturer Envision, which is also a partner of Renault in France. Mercedes plans to become a 100% electric brand by 2030 “in markets that allow it” and aims for carbon neutrality for its vehicle fleet in 2039. The EQS SUV will be officially presented on April 19, 2022.
