Melanie Gaydos is an extraordinary model: she suffers from a rare genetic disease. Born without teeth or hair, she poses for several photographers.
After years of conformism, fashion is giving pride of place to extraordinary models. Winnie Harlow and Khoudia Diop have proven that skin color is no limit on the catwalks. A young American woman demonstrates, for her part, that a genetic disease does not pose any more problem.
Born without nails, teeth or hair, Melanie Gaydos recently appeared in the pages of fashion magazine iD. Her unusual physique makes her an increasingly popular model. Nothing predestined her for that, however. The American suffers from a rare genetic disorder: ectodermal dysplasia, also known as Clouston syndrome.

40 surgeries
The syndrome from which the young woman suffers is “a genetic disease of the development of the ectoderm”, explains the site Orphanet. This results in malformations of the hair, teeth, but also of the skin and sweat glands. Several hundred forms of the disease exist and almost all of them cause a defect in the sweating mechanism. The body is therefore incapable of regulating its temperature on its own.
Melanie Gaydos was born with a particularly marked form of Clouston syndrome. It took about 40 surgeries to correct his cleft lip and palate (better known as a cleft lip) and other defects in his eyes and ears.

The dangers of heat
The model ended up accepting her body as it was, without dentures or a wig. “Having teeth only makes people around me feel better,” she told the US office of the Huffington Post. I found a way to come to terms with my illness and my body, both in how it looks and how it works. “
It took him well: a photographer agreed to take some photos with her. Today, Melanie Gaydos is a rising name in the fashion industry. She now wishes to evolve within the world of haute-couture.
But caution remains in order for the American. Because she is not able to sweat. It is therefore particularly vulnerable to strong heat. It is one of the main risks associated with his disease.
Children with ectodermal dysplasia should drink very regularly and wear cooler clothing. It is not uncommon for neurological lesions to occur before the diagnosis, generally made after several episodes of hyperthermia.
