Research on the subject is not lacking: after having said “yes” to their partner, men are prone to being overweight. Once is not custom, a new study conducted by the University of Bath School of Management (Great Britain) and published in the journal Social Science and Medicine confirms this phenomenon.
1.4 kg heavier than unmarried men
To reach such a conclusion, 8729 couples were observed by British researchers between 1999 and 2013. Every two years, they had to provide information on their marital and family situation as well as their body mass index (BMI). The results showed that married men had a higher BMI than those who did not have a ring on their finger: they weighed an average of 1.4 kg more than the latter.
The study did not stop there since it reveals that marriage is not the only factor that can influence weight gain: men also gain weight during the years following the birth of their children. On the other hand, they would lose a few pounds before and after a divorce. Women, for their part, would be less concerned by this phenomenon and would keep a more or less constant weight following a marriage, a birth or a divorce. Useful data, according to Joanna Syrda, author of the study, since they allow us to understand “what social factors can influence weight gain (…) in order to make informed decisions about health and well-being. », she explains.
