– Before using for the first time, it is best to wash your diapers several times, the cotton diapers only reaching their maximum absorption capacity after ten washes.
– While waiting for the laundry, soak your diapers after each change in a large container with a lid (trash can with lid, basin, diaper bucket …) with water. Against bad odors and bacteria, add a few drops of tea tree essential oil.
– Opt for the layered net. Thanks to it, you will no longer need to put your hands in your soaking bucket when placing the diapers in the washing machine.
Make way for “green-washing”!
Opt for “green” washing products: soap nuts, biodegradable detergents or washing balls. “Classic” detergents indeed contain enzymes and certain substances which damage washable diapers. Also avoid glycerine Marseille soap because it makes diapers less absorbent. Forget also softeners that make diapers waterproof, or detergents based on chlorine, harmful to the skin, textiles and the environment.
To keep your diapers soft and supple, nothing like the recipes of grandmothers! Pour a few drops of white vinegar into the softening compartment of your machine. Also, perfume your laundry with a few drops of lavender, orange or lavandin essential oil, and mix the scents as you wish.
The right temperature
Washing at 60 ° C is largely sufficient. But if your baby is sick, washing at 90 ° C will kill bacteria.
Polyurethane or microfiber protective pants should not be washed with each change. We rinse, we spread and basta! It’s easy to organize yourself around two or three waterproof breeches: one in reserve, one that dries, one in use. Note that repeated drying in the machine reduces the tightness of these protections.
Prefer drying in the open air: faster and more ecological. For fleece panties, on the other hand, more frequent washing is necessary. As for those in wool, which are more delicate, there is only one solution: wash by hand in lukewarm water and with a detergent for woolens. It is also advisable to soak them in a lanolin bath once every three weeks to preserve waterproofness.
