Some women live with a split reproductive system. A rare phenomenon, the cause of which is still mysterious.
As recently revealed Evelyn Miller, star of the OnlyFans porn platform, it is possible to be born with two wombs. “I use a vagina for work and a vagina for my personal life, which makes my activity much easier physically and psychologically”, she testifies.
Prevalence
Uterine didelphia is a rare pathology: it is estimated that it affects approximately one woman in 2,000.
Diagnostic
Curiously enough, uterine didelphia often goes unnoticed. It is usually only diagnosed with ultrasound, pregnancy or problems with the menstrual cycle.
Origin
This pathology appears before birth, during the embryonic stage. Normally, during this period, the müllerian ducts of the female embryo give rise to “horns” which eventually fuse to form a single uterus. In people with uterine didelphia, this fusion does not take place, ultimately constituting two sets.
Shapes
Uterine didelphia can take many forms. Some women have two wombs, two cervixes and two vaginas, while others have only one vagina connected to both cervixes and two wombs. Whatever the configuration, the organs are all housed between the bladder and the rectum.
Pregnancies
Having two uteruses means it is possible to carry a pregnancy in each of them, which, according to gynecologist Robert Zurawin, happens to about one in 25,000 women with uterine didelphia.
It is also possible that separated uteri can harbor separate pregnancies. This is the case of a British woman who, in 2006, gave birth to three babies. The trio consisted of twins who were conceived in one womb, while the third child was developed in the other. This incredible event was the result of two eggs, fertilized by two different sperm.
Hazards
The complexity of uterine didelphia can make pregnancies more difficult due to the proximity of the two organs. The three babies we have just mentioned, for example, were born extremely small.
