Young adults who have had greater endurance during exercise on the treadmill live longer and are less likely to suffer from heart attack Where strokelater in life, according to a study published online by the Journal of internal medicine.
This study included 4,872 adults who underwent a first stress test on treadmill between March 1985 and June 1986 and 2472 people underwent a second treadmill test seven years later. These treadmill tests consisted of 9 stages of two minutes each with a gradual increase in difficulty.
The results led to the conclusion that every minute spent on the treadmill reduced the risk of death by 12% by cardiovascular disease (heart attack or stroke) years later.
Indeed, all were followed for 27 years in order to assess their state of health and more particularly their possible obesity, contraction of their heart muscle, calcification of the coronary arteries (which marks a cardiac risk) but also deaths from cardiovascular disease.
Of the 4,872 study participants, 273 (5.6%) died and 193 developed cardiovascular disease during follow-up. Of the deaths, 200 were unrelated to a cardiovascular disorder and 45 were due to cancer.
“It shows that exercising as a young adult is not only helpful for the figure, but it reduces cardiovascular risk later on.” emphasize the researchers.
