Driving around without a driver is actually not allowed in traffic yet, but a large supermarket chain already drives vans without a driver!
It is something many a commuter dreams of: being able to go to work without having to drive a car and still experience the individuality of driving. That would be possible with an autonomous car. Unfortunately, there are still too many snags to work with autonomous cars on a large scale. Today there is a wide range of aids on cars, but driving without a driver is not yet allowed.
Buses without a driver
The American large supermarket chain Walmart thinks otherwise. They announced that they now have a route on which their vans travel from A to B without a driver. That security issue is to be taken very seriously, so how did they manage to do that?
Predictable trajectory
It is therefore not yet the case that the driverless vans mingle with the traffic in busy cities. It concerns a route between a distribution center and a Walmart store in the American state of Arkansas. This route is already driven several times daily, completely autonomously, but with a driver in the car. Walmart recently dared to drive the stretches without a supervisor in the car. The company is now driving a route completely autonomously for the first time.
gatik
The technology comes from the relatively young Gatik, who has been able to get the autonomous Ford Transit to perfection. There are several places where Gatik’s driverless vans now drive around, but with a supervisor on board. It is a very early start, but perhaps the beginning of a breakthrough.
