“Today I shared one of my deepest secrets.” Visiting a reception center for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) homeless people, Lady Gaga revealed that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTS). While the star had revealed during an American program to have been raped at the age of 19, she explained that this episode had triggered in her PTSD syndrome. “I don’t have the same problems as you, but I have a mental illness, and I fight this mental illness every day,” she told the homeless people she visited.
People in a state of post-traumatic stress are confronted in their daily life with images, memories, smells which bring back the pain of the traumatic event lived, at the origin of this psychic distress. The symptoms of this PTS, frequent in soldiers returning from Afghanistan, are variable and multiple, recalls the Ministry of Defense website : nightmares associated with trauma or other horrific events; flashbacks (reminiscences of the event); feeling of distress aroused by recalling the incident; physical symptoms caused by recalling the event such as sweating, increased heart rate, or muscle tension. To these signs can be added other disabling symptoms such as sleeping troubles, difficulty concentrating, etc.
Rape victims exposed to post-traumatic stress
An American study published in the journal Depression and anxiety recently suggested that post-traumatic stress may affect different areas of the brain according to the sex of the affected person. A discovery that leads us to think about different treatments (antidepressants, EMDR, cognitive-behavioral therapy, etc.).
The number of women victims of rape is estimated at 86,000 women each year in France, recalled the feminist collective against rape by unveiling its new campaign to launch a free number for victims. Of these, many could suffer from post-traumatic stress.
